About Kiberia Creative Arts (KiCA)

Kibera Creative Arts (KiCA) empowers the community of Kibera through the Arts. They strive to change the narrative about Kibera to one of hope, talent, and opportunity for growth. They achieve this by creating a platform for artists to access resources, education, and a place to showcase their talents. They provide children and young adults with after school classes and mentoring in music, dance, poetry, painting, acting and comedy, and they provide space where youth and professional artists can rehearse and record. Ultimately the goal is to offer the community a space to create, to dream, to learn, to meet, to grow, to enjoy, to live  their dreams, and enable Kibera to economically benefit from a rich and lively artistic sector.

A Snapshot of Kibera

Kibera is the largest informal settlement in Nairobi, often referred to as “the largest urban slum in Kenya” (and possibly in the entire continent). There is limited access to running water, sanitation systems, trash removal, or reliable electricity. A majority of the residents live in extreme poverty and lack safe housing and basic services such as quality education and medical care. However, KiCA helps to shine a light on the strengths of Kibera, the strong sense of community, the diversity, and the cultural and creative riches that abound.

Volunteering at KiCA

KiCA welcomes volunteers to help with a variety of projects and programs. Depending on the day, volunteers may be able to help with preparing meals or snacks for the children during their after-school and weekend arts classes, helping with facilities upgrades, or simply providing an audience for performers practicing their skills.
