Top 15 Places to Travel in 2023

Travel has seen quite the comeback since COVID, but in general travelers have played it safe by flocking to Europe.  In 2023, we are sure to see Instagram posts from a greater variety of destinations around the world, Here are our top picks for non-European places to travel.

1) New Zealand

From the volcanic North Island to the mountainous South Island, travelers are heading back to this dramatic destination that remained virtually isolated for years.  It’s thrilling to have the opportunity to sip sauvignon blancs, enjoy stunning vistas and wonder at the country’s awesome beauty yet again.  Some activities include hiking, hot air ballooning, rafting, biking, bungee jumping, visiting vineyards, and trekking…just to name a few.

2) Morocco

Morocco was ready to be a top travel destination in 2020 so it’s had a few years to perfect their hotels and services.  It’s an exotic destination with warm hospitality that makes you feel right at home. With winding medinas, stunning deserts, vibrant cities, and warm and friendly locals, Morocco is a top destination for 2023.

3) South Africa

One part of the world that flourished during COVID was the national parks of Africa. Without tourists, the animals had the chance to really roam.  Now that tourism is coming back, it’s the perfect time to get down to South Africa and see the incredible animal kingdom.  Top it off with happening restaurants in Cape Town and delicious Pinotage in the winelands.  Be sure to check out how you can get a more local experience by volunteering for a day.

Turkey is a rich and diverse historical landscape waiting to be discovered.  The exquisite markets and historical sites along the Bosporus in Istanbul are just the starting point.  Imagine taking a hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia or relaxing by the sea in Bodrum.  Travelers can experience a truly magical and well balanced, vacation.

5) Costa Rica

Costa Rica has always been a popular destination, but even more so in 2023 as travelers are starting to branch back out into Latin America.  From beaches to rainforests, the rich ecosystems can entertain its visitors for a long weekend or weeks on end.  Amongst the surfing, rafting and waterfall hiking, be sure to explore some of the volunteer opportunities to see a different side of this beautiful country and its welcoming people.

6) Japan

Perhaps one of the more exciting countries to reopen, Japan is a land of unique culture and contrasts.  It’s the perfect mix of fast-paced, modern life and ancient traditions. The best travel tip for this destination is allowing enough time to embrace both ends of the spectrum.

7) The Galapagos

While the mainland of Ecuador has so much to offer, the true draw is The Galapagos.  Now that travelers are more comfortable stepping foot on cruise ships (especially small ships), this 19-island archipelago that is home to more than 9,000 plant and animal species is topping travel wish lists.  If cruise ships aren’t your thing, keep in mind there are also incredible lodges for land based journeys.

8) Thailand

When people think of Southeast Asia, they often immediately think of Thailand.  And for good reason, it’s truly the heart of the region.  It’s a wondrous kingdom filled with Buddhist temples, mouth watering food, exotic wildlife and stunning beaches.  Not to mention the massages.  Find a way to give back and care for the animals, especially the gentle giant elephants.

9) Mexico

All during COVID, travelers flocked to Mexico but tended to keep it safe with Cabo, Tulum and Puerto Vallarta.  But there is so much more to discover.  Mexico City is arguably one of the most interesting cities in the world.  San Miguel offers kind locals and chic stores, and the beaches of Zihuatanejo are still (somewhat) undiscovered.  It’s time to go back and dig a little deeper.

10) Iceland

Even though this was the perfect COVID destination thanks to its outdoor nature, it remained off the beaten path for most people.  In the summertime, the sun barely sets so hiking, diving, golfing, fishing, snorkeling and more.  In the wintertime, it’s possible to glacier hike during the day and hunt the northern lights at night.

11) Australia

It’s time to go back down under, now that they will have us again.  Big, bold and colorful, Australia is a unique destination offering dramatic coastlines, diverse nature and vibrant cities.  Not to mention the charming and vivacious people, eager to welcome people to the Australian way of life.

12) Peru

Machu Picchu always seems to be top of everyone’s bucket list.  Get there sooner than later to appreciate the best food in Latin America, stunning Sacred Valley and of course the treasured lost city.  If you have more time, be sure to make a stop through the Amazon and enjoy the cuisine in Lima.

13) Canada

The pandemic resulted in profound socioeconomic changes in Canada.  This diverse and stunning country took the opportunity to build a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.  You can see this renewed sense of commitment in the cities of Vancouver and Toronto, and the mountain towns of Whistler and Banff.  Strike up conversations with locals to learn more.

14) Anguilla

If you are craving that perfect Caribbean Island, look no further than Anguilla.  This slice of paradise is the perfect place to relax on the beach, snorkel in the clear blue waters, and enjoy some incredible resorts. Sun, sand, and a drink in your hand is just what the doctor ordered for 2023!

15) Panama

During the past few years, some incredibly unique resorts popped up all around Panama.  From beach towns like Bocas del Torro to more isolated islands like Isla Palenque, it’s definitely on the up and coming list.  These relaxing experiences are perfectly balanced by rich culture, history and not to mention fun nights out in Caso Viejo, Panama City’s old town.
